LEARN ENGLISH IN EDINBURGH

Edinburgh is a center of culture; its extraordinary architectural heritage and historical magnificence will soon charm you. Built on seven hills like Rome, the city is divided into the medieval Old Town and the Georgian New Town. The neo-classical architecture is in the New Town, but the best walks (including the spookiest alleys) are in the Old Town.
Edinburgh is well-known for its friendly people and its compact, green environment. It is one of the most student-friendly cities. It is also a city for walking; a lot of tiny lanes called wynds in the Old Town will give you a rare sight of medieval Scotland.

About the city

Population: 448,624 (2001 census)
Currency: Pound sterling (GBP £).
Average temperature: Temperatures in Edinburgh range from 0.15ºC to 18.4ºC.

Edinburgh has a great social and cultural life, a busy sporting calendar and a rich history, all reflected in its stunning architecture. Besides the medieval sights and the grandeur of the New Town, you'll find modern architecture like the Parliament, Dynamic Earth and the New Museum of Scotland.

It is a safe and prosperous city with a prosperous economy, plenty of parks and open public spaces. Edinburgh’s excellent architecture ranges from ancient churches to monumental Victorian masterpieces - all dominated by a castle on a precipitous crag in the city's heart.

Edinburgh Castle is the city's most famous monument. Built on the core of an extinct volcano, it is spectacularly sited on the edge of a craggy rock at the top of the Royal Mile. Edinburgh is also a city of fine gardens, and open spaces including Holyrood Park (with the twin peaks of Arthur's Seat and Salisbury Crags) one of the largest city centre natural parks in Europe, and Princes Street Gardens, between the Old and New Towns.

Edinburgh is well known for the annual Edinburgh Festival, the largest performing arts festival in the world, and for the Hogmanay street party. At the time of the art festivals the population of the city doubles. There is something for everyone; great pubs, clubs and restaurants, national museums and galleries, comedy, theatre, cinemas.

The climate in Edinburgh is best from May to September, but whenever you go, you're likely to see both sun and rain. In summer, daylight hours are long, and the evenings seem endless. In winter, it's cold and daylight hours are short, but with so much going on, Edinburgh is still worth visiting.
