London is a region of England, also commonly known as the Greater London area. Greater London is composed of the City of London and the 32 London boroughs surrounding it. The urban sprawl of the metropolis covers a roughly similar area, with a slightly larger population. Beyond this is the vast London commuter belt. Almost one third of London’s total area is made up of green spaces, with 143 registered parks and gardens.The City of London is the oldest part of London, and yet with its towering sky scrapers it is also the most modern. St Paul's Cathedral is the most visited spot in the City. Built after the Great Fire to replace the Church that had previously stood there, St Paul’s galleries and crypt are legendary. ![]() London is also home to Britain’s national art collections, the Royal family and a host of major attractions. In London there are currently four World Heritage Sites: Palace of Westminster, Tower of London, Maritime Greenwich and Kew Gardens and 17 national museums across the capital. London is a very accessible city; it has five international airports, an efficient road network and extensive Underground and a large port. It serves as the largest aviation hub in the world, and its principal airport, Heathrow, carries more international passengers than any other airport in the world.
